Founded by two current sophomores in college, our aim
is to treat Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy using under-explored protein
therapeutics. Some might see our age as a drawback, but we are
extremely motivated and have cultivated strong connections throughout
both the neuromuscular and broader life-sciences world. We are not traditional biotech entrepreneurs, we are not afraid
to take risks and we will pursue our ideas relentlessly. Check out the "Our
Approach" tab to learn more.
Shivin Kumar, a sophomore at Tufts University, has been thinking about an idea for treating Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy since seventh grade when he heard a podcast about it. Since then, he has founded Uplands Med and for the past few months, he and fellow senior Malyka Ram have advanced the idea further, and have won the first MBC BioLabs “Golden Ticket” sponsored by Mission BioCapital.
He has worked at the Engleman Lab at Stanford University where he learned basic lab techniques and experiments. After working at MBC Biolabs in San Carlos, he is continuing the company lab work at Watertown Biolabs —close to Tufts.
Malyka Ram is a sophomore at Purdue University, she has loved biology ever since her mother gifted her pop out anatomy books when she was a child. She worked at the Alzheimer’s Disease Research Center at Stanford University at the beginning of high school, and is looking forward to exploring biomedical R&D through her and her peer’s research of Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy. After working at MBC Biolabs for a few months, she is looking to continue the company work at a lab at Purdue.
